Cycle route weather forecast
Check the weather along your whole ride, not just where you start. Load a GPX route from Strava, Komoot, Garmin or Ride with GPS, say when you set off and how fast you ride, and see the forecast rain, temperature and wind every 30 minutes of the route.
Open the route plannerFree, no sign-up. Your GPX file is read in your browser and is not uploaded to this site.
What you get
Weather at the time you get there
Each point on the route is matched to the forecast hour when you will reach it, so a dry start followed by afternoon showers shows up where it will actually hit you.
Headwind, crosswind or tailwind
Colour the route by wind to see which stretches face into the wind. Wind arrows at each point show the direction and speed in km/h or mph.
Rain and temperature along the way
Colour the route by temperature or rain, and read the table for the time, elapsed time, distance, temperature, rain rate and 10 m wind at every 30-minute point.
Met Office forecast data
UK and Ireland routes use the Met Office UKV model, the 2 km resolution model for the UK and Ireland, which reaches about five days ahead. Routes anywhere else in the world, or rides further ahead, switch automatically to the Met Office Global model (about 10 km, up to seven days ahead), with wind gusts as well. The route planner always says which model it is using.
How to plan a ride with the weather
- Export your route as a GPX file. Any planned route or past activity will do.
- Open the Route planner and load the GPX file.
- Set your start time (UK time) and your average speed in km/h or mph.
- Read the forecast. Switch "Colour route by" between temperature, rain and wind, and scroll the table for the detail. Change the start time to find the driest or least windy window.
Strava weather route planning and other apps
The route planner reads standard GPX files, so it works with routes from most cycling apps:
- Strava: open a route (or an activity), then use the export or download option to save it as GPX.
- Komoot: open a tour and download it as a GPX track.
- Garmin Connect: open a course or activity and export it as GPX.
- Ride with GPS: open a route and export it as a GPX track.
wthr.technology is an independent site and is not affiliated with Strava, Komoot, Garmin or Ride with GPS. It only reads GPX files you export from them.
Questions
Can I use a Strava route?
Yes. Export the route from Strava as a GPX file and load it in the Route tab. Routes from Komoot, Garmin Connect and Ride with GPS work the same way.
Which weather forecast does it use?
Met Office forecast data. Routes inside the UK and Ireland use the Met Office UKV model (2 km resolution, about five days ahead). Routes elsewhere, or rides further ahead, use the Met Office Global model (about 10 km, up to seven days ahead). The Route tab shows which model it is using, and you can pick one yourself.
Does it show headwinds?
Yes. Colour the route by wind to see where you will have a headwind, crosswind or tailwind, with wind arrows at each forecast point.
Is it free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no account. Your GPX file is read in your browser and is not uploaded to wthr.technology.
Does it work outside the UK?
Yes. Routes outside the UK and Ireland switch automatically to the Met Office Global model, which covers the whole world up to seven days ahead, and the table adds a gust column. For the wider picture there is also the Global Forecast map.
